Cutting Edge Runway

An evening hosted by Fashion Queensland in collaboration with the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the Powerhouse in Brisbane.

Weeks earlier, we were invited to visit the labs at IMB, where we chose the lab undergoing research into Endometriosis Research. The objective: to create a one-off garment to be showcased to a local audience on the runway alongside Queensland Designers, Bulley Bulley, KRZYSZTOF, Lydia Jiang and Joteo.

We were inspired by the words of the lab director and the microscopic images from the lab. The lab grows microscopic uterus organoids, which replicates each patients uterus. Tests are done to determine what medications the organoid responds to/harms them.

The work they do is critical to determining data into each individual patient diagnosed with Endometriosis, and the medications that will most benefit them. As every patient is different, this research can trim years away from a single patients suffering.

Due to confidentiality of patients, we are unable to share images from our lab visit. So please enjoy the moments we interpreted for the runway.

The organoids were like glowing shells with matter in between... some thriving and some not surviving.

We chose to incorporate the organza overcoat and dress as a replica of how Endometriosis works. The same microbiome within the ovaries, extends itself out to the outside of the ovaries and to the uterus - Endometriosis patients suffer with the pain of this.

At the same time, this wasn't just about the research. We thoroughly took on this as a pragmatic approach, and not just a visual concept. This silhouette is made for the wearer. Natural fabrics, A-line structures and a piece that is beautiful so which to distract any on-lookers eyes away from problem areas - hips, stomach and abdomen.
